The trumpet traditionally has been used to denote military might, but here such might is depicted in conquests fought not only in the field but also in the bedroom and beyond.
The war/love battle is highlighted in Melani's Cantata for trumpet and voice All'Armi, Pensieri, and also in arias by Scarlatti. The voice is lifted in praise with the exquisite Nigra Sum Sed Formosa for voice and violin by Merula.
Joy and exultation are expressed in virtuosic instrumental works by Biber and Castello.
